L’Aquariam de Barcelona
A spectacular presentation of marine life is the only way to describe L’Aquarium de Barcelona. This is considered to be the biggest display of Mediterranean Sea life with some tropical marine life located in Europe. The aquarium is located in Port Vell, the old harbour of Barcelona and can boast proudly of having 35 tanks with just about 11,000 animals inhabiting and a grand total of 450 species presented to visitors throughout the year. It is said that to date the aquarium has been visited by 15 million people.
Popular Displays and Activities
One of the main highlights at L’Aquariam de Barcelona is the Oceanarium with its spectacular display of sharks, stingrays and eels just to name a few. The unique part of this presentation is that the visitors are in an enclosed tunnel 80m in length located within the Oceanarium with see through sides and top allowing them to experience what it feels like to have all these sea creatures swimming so closely around them, it can only be explained as a surreal feeling!
The tanks are a display of the species which are characteristic to the Mediterranean and tropical waters; varying from corals, fish and many different sea occupants that one probably never imagined existed. The aquarium also has two popular exhibitions; one being the Planeta Aqua which seeks to enlighten visitors on the importance of underwater sea life in relation to the planet’s development. It shows how different animals have adapted to different conditions existing underwater; from penguins to alligators. The Explora exhibition allows the children to interact, listen, learn and touch so as to obtain a better understanding of the sea world. There is also the miniaquaria where children can explore a display of interesting underwater wildlife and plants.
“Diving With Sharks” is an activity designed for divers allowing them to swim amongst the deep sea creatures and the ever popular “Sleeping With Sharks” allows children between the ages of eight (8) and twelve (12) years old to spend a night in the aquarium after partaking in a number of activities.
L’Aquariam de Barcelona is truly an attraction for the entire family and this sea wonder remains open throughout the year with the convenience of souvenir shops and photos.
